Parent Liaison

Dear Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, (BMLK), Community Stakeholders,

I am happy to announce I have been appointed to the position of Parent Liaison at (BMLK). In consideration of the fact the end of the school year was a lively time for us all, I decided to write a letter of introduction for you to read at your convenience. In describing myself I often make use of the words; tenacious, loyal, humorous, unconventional and kind. I am proud to be the oldest of six children and credit my siblings for helping me to develop into an empathetic, accountable, and considerate person. Additionally, together with my exceptional spouse of twenty-four years, I have raised two incredible children and am the grandparent of one fantastic grandson! In my leisure time, I enjoy various hobbies where I can make use of my creative and curious mind. These hobbies include saltwater reef-keeping, playing and listening to all types of music, and kayaking the waterways of our beautiful area.

I grew up primarily in Novato, Fairfax, and West Marin. I am a Sir Francis Drake High school alumna and recent Sonoma State University graduate. I have 20+ years of work experience in service to others in the Bay Area and credit that experience, along with my own diverse heritage, to my ability and enjoyment of relating to people from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The past two years I have worked as a Family Advocate for the Marin Head Start preschool in room 109. Many of you may have seen me around campus, crossed paths with me in the music program, or, even worked in conjunction with me in facilitating the needs of our shared students and families.

I have worked in collaboration with Kwame Nitoto, from Bay Area Plan, and Patricia Brawley, from Parent Services Project, towards strengthening and engaging parents/guardians leadership in the well-being of their families and community. Our outreach for these sessions was conducted through informational fliers, calls to parents/guardians, and via word of mouth in the community. The participants were a combination of Marin Head Start preschool and (BMLK) parents/guardians.  We had upwards of 15 participants. Continuing these “Parent Cafés” and working to ensure they become a permanent staple in the (BMLK) climate will be one of my aims for the upcoming school year. Since I have found the type of work I do necessitates, among other things, mobility, flexibility, and communicativeness, I have provided my contact information below. I would love to hear your input on how together we can improve the home to school connection and strengthen families here in Marin City.

I am excited to further develop and expand my unique skill set in service to (BMLK), in the role of Parent Liaison. I am enthusiastic about working with each of you as we devote our hearts and minds in an effort to continuously generate a positive, respectful, and welcoming environment for the (BMLK) students, parents/guardians, and community members at large. I look forward to getting to know each of you and hope this writing has aided you in getting to know me.

Sincerely,

Felicia Younger
